The Sarkin Kpata of Lokoja, Alhaji Ali Yaro, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of theft at the Kpata Market waterfront, alleging that young men and women regularly steal traders’ goods whenever boats arrive on market days.
Speaking with NationalWatch Tv, the traditional ruler called on the government to urgently provide adequate security at the market to curb the criminal activities and protect traders from recurring losses.
Alhaji Yaro said the situation had become alarming, forcing him to seek the intervention of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
According to him, NIWA responded by deploying measures to secure the area, but the efforts yielded little result as the barricade erected along the riverbank was later destroyed by suspected thieves.
He noted that the persistent criminal activities have continued to pose risks to both traders and residents, adding that a tragic incident occurred last year when a woman reportedly drowned as a result of the chaos associated with the activities around the waterfront.
The Sarkin Kpata also warned that the river water level is gradually rising, increasing concerns about safety and the need for stricter monitoring of activities around the market.
Some traders who spoke with NationalWatch Tv commended the efforts of the Sarkin Kpata in drawing attention to the challenges facing the market.
They appealed to the government to provide security personnel, install streetlights, and improve other basic facilities to enhance safety and create a more conducive environment for business activities.
The traders said addressing the security concerns would not only protect lives and property but also boost commercial activities at one of Lokoja’s busiest waterfront markets.
