Hundreds of travellers were left stranded after a heavy downpour caused severe flooding along a section of the Ore-Benin Expressway, disrupting vehicular movement and creating long queues of vehicles.
A trending video circulating on social media on Thursday showed floodwaters completely covering a portion of the busy highway, leaving motorists with no option but to halt their journeys as the road became impassable.
In the footage, passengers were seen waiting helplessly while commercial and private vehicles remained parked on both sides of the affected stretch.
Some motorists reportedly turned back in search of alternative routes, while others waited for the floodwaters to recede.
The Ore-Benin Expressway is one of Nigeria’s major highways, serving as a vital link between the South-West and South-South regions.
Any disruption along the corridor often results in significant traffic delays and economic losses.
Although there were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries at the time of filing this report, commuters expressed concern over the recurring flooding on the highway, calling on the relevant authorities to improve drainage infrastructure and ensure proper maintenance of the road.
Emergency officials and road users were urged to exercise caution, especially as the rainy season continues to increase the risk of flooding across several parts of the country.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or when normal traffic flow will be fully restored.
