A political commentator, Reno Omokri, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain focused on its constitutional responsibilities and disregard pressures arising from the ongoing crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement, Omokri criticized a faction of the party allegedly aligned with former Senate President David Mark, accusing them of attempting to undermine democratic institutions by seeking foreign intervention in a domestic political dispute.
He questioned Markâs democratic credentials, referencing allegations tied to Nigeriaâs military era and the controversial 1993 Nigerian presidential election, which was widely believed to have been won by late businessman and politician MKO Abiola.
Omokri further argued that internal party disagreements should be resolved through legal channels rather than external appeals, describing reported plans by the faction to petition foreign governments over INECâs role as unnecessary.
He stressed that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and its institutions, including INEC, are not subject to foreign influence, urging the electoral body to remain impartial and guided strictly by the Constitution.
The commentator also called on aggrieved members of the ADC to take advantage of judicial processes, noting reports that the Court of Appeal has granted an accelerated hearing on the matter.
The remarks come amid deepening divisions within the ADC, with rival factions contesting leadership and control of party structures ahead of future political activities.
