The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sunday Karimi, has said that state governors should be held accountable for the growing insecurity across the country, insisting that the Federal Government alone cannot be blamed for security challenges at the grassroots level.
Karimi made the remarks on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday while contributing to deliberations on the state of security in the country.
He specifically referenced the recent kidnapping incident in Aiyedun Bunu, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where about 28 persons were reportedly abducted by gunmen.
The lawmaker argued that governors, as chief security officers of their states, have a critical role to play in maintaining peace and supporting security agencies through intelligence gathering, logistics, and community-based security initiatives.
According to him, while the Federal Government provides overall leadership and coordination of the nation’s security architecture, state governments are closer to the people and are better positioned to identify and respond to emerging security threats.
Karimi lamented the abduction of residents in Aiyedun Bunu, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need for stronger collaboration between state governments and security agencies.
“Governors should take responsibility for insecurity in their states instead of blaming the Federal Government for every security challenge. They receive security votes and have a duty to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property,” he stated during the Senate proceedings.
The senator stressed that insecurity requires a collective response from all tiers of government, adding that effective intelligence gathering and community engagement remain essential tools in tackling kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities.
He called for intensified efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims in Aiyedun Bunu and urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the attack are apprehended and prosecuted.
Karimi further appealed to state governments across the country to invest more in local security structures and work closely with federal security agencies to curb the rising wave of criminality.
The senator maintained that lasting solutions to insecurity would only be achieved when state authorities complement federal efforts and take proactive steps to safeguard their communities.
