The screening process for aspirants seeking tickets for the Senate and House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress has reportedly taken a new twist, as indications emerge that aspirants with pending cases involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission may face disqualification.
Sources within the party disclosed that the leadership of the APC is considering strict measures aimed at protecting the image of the party ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
According to insiders, aspirants currently under investigation or facing unresolved corruption-related allegations may not scale through the screening exercise.
The development, which has generated reactions among party members and supporters, is said to be part of efforts to ensure that only candidates with credible records emerge to fly the partyâs flag in the National Assembly elections.
A party source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the APC leadership is determined to avoid controversies that could affect the partyâs chances at the polls.
âAny aspirant with serious issues involving anti-corruption agencies may have difficulties during the screening process. The party wants candidates that can stand public scrutiny,â the source said.
Meanwhile, some aspirants have expressed concern over the move, arguing that allegations should not automatically amount to disqualification unless proven by a competent court.
As of the time of filing this report, the APC leadership has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
