Amid growing controversy within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a group of concerned Nigerian youths, in a peaceful protest, has thrown its weight behind the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the reported derecognition of David Mark as the party’s national chairman.
The protesters, who carried placards with inscriptions supporting INEC, said the Commission acted within the confines of the law and in compliance with relevant court rulings regarding the leadership structure of the party.
They argued that INEC’s decision reflects its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining neutrality in internal party affairs, stressing that electoral bodies must rely strictly on legal pronouncements in matters of party leadership.
The group criticized what it described as attempts by some political actors to politicize the issue, warning that unwarranted attacks on INEC could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
According to them, disagreements arising from party leadership disputes should be resolved through appropriate legal channels rather than through media campaigns aimed at discrediting the electoral umpire.
They further noted that INEC’s recent actions, including its conduct in the local government elections in the Federal Capital Territory, demonstrate consistency in adhering to due process and fairness.
Reaffirming their support, the youths urged INEC to remain steadfast and continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities without fear or favor.
They also called on political parties and their leaders to respect court decisions and promote internal democracy, emphasizing that such steps are crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system and democratic stability.
