There were emotional scenes in Abuja on Sunday as the remains of Captain Umar Aliyu, a Nigerian Army officer killed in Plateau State, were laid to rest amid tears and prayers from family members, colleagues and sympathisers.
The funeral prayer (Jana’iza) was led by Sheikh Shehu Ahmad Galadanchi, the Murshid and Chief Imam of the National Mosque Abuja, who prayed for the repose of the late officer’s soul and urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace and stability across the country.
Following the prayers, the late officer was buried at the Gudu Muslim Cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites. Many mourners were visibly emotional as the body was lowered into the grave, with fellow soldiers standing in solemn respect.
Captain Aliyu, an indigene of Lokoja, was reportedly ambushed by suspected kidnappers in Plateau State while on duty.
Sources said he was attacked alongside two of his military colleagues and four members of a local vigilante group during an operation aimed at tackling insecurity in the area.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced daily by personnel of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies deployed to volatile regions of the country to protect lives and property.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Danladi Abdulsalam expressed gratitude to those who came from far and near to attend the burial ceremony.
He also thanked the Nigerian Army, friends and well-wishers for their support and solidarity during the difficult time.
He described the late officer as a devoted family man and a courageous soldier who served his country with dedication and honour.
Several military officers who attended the burial paid tribute to Captain Aliyu, noting that his sacrifice would not be forgotten.
They described him as disciplined, hardworking and deeply committed to the mission of safeguarding the nation.
Captain Umar Aliyu is survived by his wife and two children.
Family members prayed for Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give his loved ones the strength and patience to bear the painful loss.
