The National Vice Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) for the South-West, Abayomi Arabambi, has alleged discrepancies in the official records of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and threatened to institute legal action over the matter.
Arabambi made the allegations while addressing journalists in Abuja, claiming that Obi’s names appeared differently in several official documents, including academic and other records.
He said the alleged inconsistencies raise concerns that should be investigated in the interest of transparency and accountability, adding that public office holders and political leaders have a responsibility to ensure that their personal records are consistent across all official documents.
According to him, the issues identified warrant scrutiny by the appropriate authorities to determine whether any legal or administrative infractions may have occurred.
The Labour Party chieftain stated that he was prepared to seek legal redress if necessary, insisting that the matter should be subjected to judicial interpretation to establish the facts.
Arabambi maintained that his comments were not aimed at attacking Obi personally but were intended to promote due diligence and accountability in public service.
He also called on relevant regulatory and law enforcement agencies to examine the documents and take appropriate action where necessary, stressing that Nigerians deserve clarity on issues involving public figures.
As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi had not publicly responded to the allegations.
There has also been no official confirmation from any government agency that the alleged discrepancies amount to wrongdoing or constitute a breach of any law.
The allegations and the threat of legal action are expected to spark fresh political debate as stakeholders await further clarification from the parties involved and any possible legal proceedings.
