Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has called for comprehensive security reforms to address the rising wave of insecurity across Kogi West and other parts of Nigeria.
Speaking during the Senate plenary on June 11, 2026, Karimi moved a motion highlighting the alarming increase in killings, kidnappings, and attacks on communities, schools, traditional institutions, and motorists.
He described the situation as a grave threat to the safety and well-being of citizens and a challenge to national security.
The senator expressed concern over the growing boldness of terrorists and other criminal elements, noting that many families and communities have been left traumatized by the persistent attacks.
He stressed that the protection of lives and property remains a constitutional responsibility of government and must be given the highest priority.
Karimi said the worsening security situation requires urgent and coordinated action by all stakeholders, emphasizing the need for practical and sustainable solutions to confront emerging security threats across the country.
As part of his recommendations, he called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security agencies, and relevant authorities to strengthen security measures nationwide through the establishment of a workable legal framework for state police.
According to him, state policing would enhance intelligence gathering, improve response times, and strengthen security at the grassroots level.
He also advocated stronger border security measures to curb the influx of illegal arms and the movement of criminal elements across Nigeria’s borders.
The lawmaker further urged the government to enforce stricter cashless transaction policies to help disrupt criminal financing networks and make it more difficult for kidnappers, terrorists, and other criminals to move illicit funds.
Karimi also emphasized the importance of greater collaboration among state governments through support for local government autonomy and community-based security initiatives, describing grassroots participation as essential to addressing insecurity effectively.
The motion added to ongoing discussions in the National Assembly on the need for far-reaching reforms aimed at restoring peace, protecting lives and property, and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
