A political pressure group, Kogi Democratic Watch, has described reported plans to support the return of all first-term members of the Kogi State House of Assembly as a risky political move capable of causing division within the ruling party and denying fresh aspirants a fair chance.
Speaking through its chairman, Alhaji Idris Muhammad, the group said automatic endorsement of incumbents would weaken internal democracy and create the impression that electoral processes are already predetermined.
According to the group, while legislative experience remains important, it should not be used as an excuse to shut out qualified new entrants who also have the capacity to represent their constituencies effectively.
Alhaji Idris Muhammad stated that many constituents are eager to assess the performance of their lawmakers and should be allowed to decide freely whether they deserve another term.
He warned that imposing candidates could generate resentment among party loyalists who have spent years building support at the grassroots level in their various local governments.
The group further maintained that the governor would earn more respect by encouraging open primaries, transparent contests, and equal opportunities for all interested aspirants.
It added that several party members across the three senatorial districts are already expressing concerns over what they described as an attempt to reserve tickets for selected individuals ahead of the next election cycle.
The group said such a move could discourage youths and women who are aspiring to participate in the political process and contribute new ideas to governance in the state.
Alhaji Idris Muhammad also noted that democracy thrives on healthy competition, debate, and the freedom of party members to choose their preferred candidates without intimidation or interference.
He urged stakeholders in the state to place competence, popularity, and constituency service above loyalty or political closeness in deciding who should emerge as candidates.
The group further called on the leadership of the ruling party to protect its internal democratic structures and avoid decisions that may create unnecessary crises before the elections.
Kogi Democratic Watch added that democracy can only flourish when leadership choices are made by the people through credible processes, not by political arrangements behind closed doors.
