More details have emerged on how security troops foiled an attempted abduction of students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Iluke Community, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with reporters described scenes of panic and confusion as heavily armed men stormed the community in the early hours of the attack, sending residents and students scampering for safety.

According to residents, the attackers advanced towards areas where students were gathered for the examination and attempted to abduct some of them before security operatives responded swiftly to the distress call.

“The gunmen came suddenly and people started running in different directions. The students were terrified, but the soldiers arrived quickly and engaged the attackers before they could carry out their mission,” an eyewitness narrated.

Another resident said the sound of gunfire echoed across the community as troops confronted the assailants, forcing them to abandon their plans and flee into nearby bushes.

Sources within the community disclosed that the security personnel demonstrated professionalism and courage during the operation, ensuring that all the students were safely rescued without sustaining any injuries.

The successful rescue operation reportedly prevented what many residents described as a potential mass kidnapping that could have disrupted the ongoing examinations and thrown families into anguish.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspected attackers was neutralized, while others escaped with varying degrees of injuries, according to local sources.

Despite the successful operation, the community suffered casualties, as three residents reportedly lost their lives during the incident.

Several others were said to have sustained varying degrees of trauma as a result of the attack.

The development has sparked renewed calls for increased security presence in rural communities, particularly in areas hosting public institutions and examination centres.

Community leaders and parents have praised the swift intervention of the troops, noting that their timely response saved dozens of students from falling into the hands of kidnappers.

“We are grateful to the security agencies. Their quick action saved our children and prevented a major tragedy. We pray such incidents never happen again,” a community elder said.

Residents have also urged security agencies to sustain surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts across vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks and reassure citizens of their safety.

As of the time of filing this report, security operatives were said to be combing nearby forests and surrounding areas in search of the fleeing suspects, while normalcy gradually returns to the community.

The incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing some parts of the country and highlights the critical role of rapid response by security forces in protecting lives and property.
