Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, on Tuesday held its 18th inaugural lecture at the university auditorium, attracting academics, students, traditional rulers and other dignitaries from within and outside Kogi State.
The lecture was delivered by Professor Adesola Ogidiola on the topic, “Geographers in the Forest: Issues, Concerns and Tasks.”
The presentation examined the critical role of geographers in forest studies, environmental protection, climate concerns and sustainable use of natural resources.
Professor Ogidiola stressed the need for proper mapping, research and policy implementation in addressing deforestation, biodiversity loss and other ecological challenges affecting communities.
He also highlighted the importance of modern technology and data gathering in environmental planning and forest management.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, who was the chief host, introduced the lecturer and read his rich citation, outlining his academic background, research accomplishments and contributions to the growth of geography as a discipline.
He described Professor Ogidiola as a seasoned scholar whose works have added value to teaching, research and community development.
He urged members of the university community to emulate the lecturer’s dedication to scholarship and service.
Professor Usman further explained the importance of inaugural lectures, noting that such events provide opportunities for professors to share years of research findings and intellectual experience with the public.
According to him, the lectures also strengthen the culture of learning and academic excellence in the institution.
The Vice Chancellor announced an upward review in the honorarium for lecturers participating in inaugural lectures, increasing the amount from N25,000 to N50,000 as part of efforts to encourage more academic participation.
The announcement drew applause from the audience.
He thanked guests, staff and students who attended the programme, adding that the event was the first inaugural lecture held since he assumed office as Vice Chancellor of the university.
Several participants commended the management of the institution for sustaining the tradition of inaugural lectures and creating a platform for intellectual engagement.
They described the lecture as insightful and timely, considering growing global concerns about environmental sustainability.
The well-attended ceremony ended with a colourful cultural display, showcasing the rich traditions of the host community and adding excitement to the memorable academic event.
