The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby girl found along the roadside in Kwaita Village, Kwali Area Council.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 3, 2026, when officers of the Rapid Response Squad on patrol in Kwali reported the case at about 12:30 a.m.
Following the report, the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit at the Kwali Division swiftly mobilized a team to the scene.
The mother and child were safely evacuated and taken to the General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical attention and were later discharged in stable condition.
The police said that in line with welfare procedures, the Officer in Charge of Welfare in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali, was contacted.
The mother and her baby were subsequently handed over to him and relocated to the FCT Childrenâs Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council for proper care and support.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the prompt response and professionalism of the officers involved, noting their compassion in assisting the woman and ensuring the safety of the newborn.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, show empathy, and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest police station or through the commandâs emergency lines.
