Residents of a Kano community erupted in violent protest on Sunday, setting tyres ablaze and blocking access to a police station while demanding that suspected kidnappers arrested earlier be released to them for instant mob justice.
In a trending video circulating online, scores of angry youths were seen chanting and insisting that the suspects be handed over, accusing the police of protecting criminals and failing to tackle rising cases of kidnapping in the area.
Thick smoke filled the air as protesters barricaded the station’s entrance, forcing officers to remain inside to avoid escalation.
Eyewitnesses said the unrest began shortly after news spread that operatives had apprehended two individuals alleged to be members of a kidnapping gang terrorising the neighbourhood.
The crowd reportedly surrounded the station, insisting the suspects would escape justice if taken through formal legal processes.
“The people are tired. Kidnappers are destroying lives and nothing is happening. We want justice and we want it now,” a protester shouted in the video.
Attempts by officers to disperse the crowd reportedly failed, prompting reinforcement deployment to prevent the situation from escalating into full-scale violence.
Police authorities were yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, but security sources confirmed that the suspects remain in custody.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over declining public trust in security agencies and the increasing resort to jungle justice across the country.
