There is a sigh of relief among residents of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, as prices of food items have begun to drop in major markets within the metropolis.
A market survey conducted today by NationalWatch TV revealed significant reductions in the cost of staple foodstuffs, offering a measure of hope to households grappling with economic challenges.
At Kpata and Old Market, traders confirmed that the price of a 50kg bag of rice, which recently sold for between ₦72,000 and ₦75,000, now goes for between ₦50,000 and ₦52,000 depending on the brand.
Similarly, a measure of beans, which cost as high as ₦2,000 a few weeks ago, has reduced to about ₦1,700. Maize and garri have also experienced noticeable drops in price, while perishable items such as tomatoes, pepper, and vegetables are now more affordable.
Some traders attributed the development to improved supply from rural farming communities and a slight reduction in transport fares.
A rice dealer, Hajiya Hadiza Magaji Jimada, told NationalWatch TV that the improved availability of goods in the market has helped to stabilize prices.
Buyers, on their part, expressed relief over the trend but appealed to the government to ensure that the situation is sustained.
“This is a good sign, but we hope it continues because feeding has been a major burden for many families,” said Mr. Usman Ali, a civil servant.
Economic observers, however, cautioned that while the development is positive, more structural measures are needed to address inflationary pressures, particularly insecurity on highways and the high cost of fuel, which often impact food distribution.
When contacted, the Kogi State Ministry of Commerce and Industry welcomed the development, describing it as an indication that recent interventions to support farmers and improve supply chains were beginning to yield results.
The Lokoja Market Traders’ Union also pledged to work with relevant authorities to ensure that prices remain stable and that food items are not hoarded.
The survey by NationalWatch TV underscores a much-needed respite for residents, even as many remain hopeful that the downward trend in food prices will persist in the coming months.
