The body of the abandoned sick man who died on Monday along Karaworo Street in Lokoja has finally been evacuated by the police.
The evacuation, which took place on Tuesday night, brought relief to residents and shop owners who had been living in fear and discomfort due to the presence of the corpse.
Many had complained about the offensive odour and the potential health risks it posed to the community.
Residents and shop owners in the area commended the police for their swift and professional action, describing it as a demonstration of responsibility and responsiveness.
They noted that the move came after several appeals to authorities through NationalWatch TV reports and social media posts.
One of the residents, Mrs. Favour James, said the police’s intervention was long overdue but appreciated, adding that “the situation was becoming unbearable, especially for those of us doing business close to the scene.”
Another trader, who identified himself simply as Mr. Ahmed, urged the government to take steps to identify those who abandoned the sick man, stressing that such acts of inhumanity should attract punishment.
The residents also called on the Ministry of Environment and the local government authorities to properly sanitize the area to prevent the spread of diseases.
They warned that such an incident should never be allowed to happen again in Lokoja or any part of Kogi State.
It was gathered that the deceased was dumped by unknown persons suspected to be his relatives after he fell seriously ill.
Despite public outcry, no one came forward to claim responsibility for his condition until his death.
As at the time of filing this report, the police were yet to disclose the identity of the deceased or the outcome of their initial findings.
However, residents are hopeful that an investigation will be launched to uncover those behind the cruel act.
