A 27-year-old man, Tenimu Usman, who raped, impregnated and abandoned a 12-year-old girl, (name withheld) in Lokoja the Kogi State capital has confessed to the crime.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday night, September 2, by youths from Inuwalange street and handed over to the Kogi State Vigilante Service, Lokoja Command.
Usman, who is fondly called Ayaga Buhun Zikir, was alleged to have raped and impregnated the minor who resides in Inuwalange street, Lokoja.
In an interview, the culprit, who resides at Hangwan Pawa says he is responsible for the pregnancy.
When he was asked the reason behind such action, Usman said that he was only playing with the minor and never intended to impregnate her.
He is currently being investigated by men of the Kogi State Vigilante Service, Lokoja Command.
Nationalwatch Tv reported that the impregnated girl said; “I got raped by someone in my neighbourhood. And it was a man who threatened to kill me if I refuse him sex. And I couldn’t tell my mum. It was just so bad for me. You know when someone bullies you to the extent that you can’t talk?
“It was so bad. I opened up to one of my friends who advised me to report to my mum, but I was afraid and couldn’t tell to her.
The young girl, who is a native of Bassa-Nge, from Bassa local government area, told reporters shortly after the arrest of the culprit that Usman serially raped her before getting her pregnant.
She also revealed that he had been raping other children in the area.
It was learnt that Lokoja traditional area, where the victim case took place, is believed to have the highest number vulnerable girls.
Findings revealed that many cases of child rape in the society are often closed due to manipulative tendencies of suspects, coupled with the fact that even when there is enough evidence for conviction, many parents are unwilling to press charges. And despite efforts by relevant stakeholders to end the menace, rape persists and most victims are denied justice.
