President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to full local government autonomy, stressing that direct allocation of funds to councils is the most effective way to drive grassroots development.
The President declared that local governments must receive their statutory funds directly, without interference, to enable them function effectively and meet the immediate needs of the people.
According to him, empowering councils financially will enhance accountability, transparency, and speedy execution of community-based projects.
âGive them their money directly,â Tinubu said, noting that local governments are closest to the people and are best positioned to deliver basic services when properly funded.
He observed that years of undue control over local government finances have weakened the third tier of government and slowed rural development across the country.
Tinubu maintained that restoring autonomy would stimulate local economies, create employment, and deepen democratic governance at the grassroots.
The President also called on state governments and other stakeholders to support reforms that strengthen local councils, adding that autonomy must be matched with strict oversight to ensure prudent use of public funds.
Political analysts believe President Tinubuâs renewed emphasis on local government autonomy signals a decisive move toward restructuring governance and accelerating inclusive development nationwide.
