The late traditional ruler of the Bassa‑Nge Kingdom, HRM Alh. Dr. Abu Ali Mopa III, has been laid to rest amid deep sorrow in Gboloko, Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The funeral, conducted on Tuesday according to Islamic rites, attracted thousands of mourners from across the region to pay their final respects to the revered monarch, who passed away in Lokoja after a brief illness.
The Muslim Jana’iza prayer, performed before the interment, was led by the Chief Imam of Oguma, Sheikh Ibrahim Kaula, who urged the people to preserve the late Etsu’s legacy of unity, tolerance and service to his community.
In a powerful display of honour, soldiers performed ceremonial burial rites, including a military escort and gun salute, in recognition of the monarch’s distinguished service as a retired senior military officer and former Military Administrator of Bauchi State.
The solemn ceremony brought many mourners to tears.
HRH Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV, the Maigari of Lokoja, led the delegation of traditional rulers who attended the burial.
Also present were HRH Alhaji Usman Obaje, OON, the Ejeh of Dekina, representing the Atta Igala; Alhaji Abuh Shaibu Okolo, the Ogohi of Anyigba; Alhaji Okolo, the Ohegba of Mozum; as well as representatives of the Kogi State Government and numerous traditional title holders.
Speaking at the event, Maigari recalled the many times he visited the late monarch, fondly remembering how the Etsu always offered wise counsel and encouragement.
“He was like a father to me. Each time I saw him, he spoke of leadership, patience and peace — his guidance has greatly shaped me,” he said, expressing deep grief at his loss.
Traditional title holders paid glowing tribute to the late Etsu, recalling his vision for a bridge linking Lokoja and Shintaku, and his persistent advocacy for the construction of a major road network across the Bassa region to boost commerce and connectivity.
They urged government authorities to realize these projects in his honour.
Engr. Nda Usman Muhammed, the Galadima of Bassa-Nge, also eulogised the late monarch, describing him as a unifying figure whose wisdom and leadership brought stability to the kingdom.
He appealed to the people to remain peaceful, united, and committed to the developmental path that the late Etsu laid out.
Government officials, cultural groups, clerics, youth organizations, and community leaders praised the Etsu Bassa-Nge as a bridge‑builder whose legacy of peace and progress will endure.
Many observed that his passing has left a deep void in the life of the Bassa-Nge Kingdom.
The late monarch is survived by wives, children, grandchildren, and a kingdom in mourning.
