Members of the Lokoja commercial motorcycle operators’ union,popularly known as Okada riders, have paid a courtesy visit to the Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Asiru Idris, reaffirming their support for the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
The visit, which took place at the commissioner’s quarters in Lokoja on Sunday, was led by Abdulrahaman Abubakar Babasauti, Chairman of the Motorcycles Owners and Operators of Nigeria (MOON), Lokoja branch.
The riders sought to commend the state government for its developmental efforts and commitment to improving citizens’ welfare.
During the visit, leaders of the association praised the commissioner for his prudent management of state finances, noting that policies under the current administration have positively impacted residents, including those in the transport sector.
As part of the engagement, the riders presented Asiwaju Asiru Idris with an award for “Best Serving Commissioner.”
Engr. Shola Oloruntoba, a member of the board of trustees, formally presented the award, lauding the commissioner’s dedication and service to the people.
Speaking on behalf of the riders, Usman Salifu Emmanuel, Special Adviser to the chairman on Security Matters, read out requests from the association.
These included the return of ticket revenue collection to the union, improvements in working conditions, provision of safety equipment, and support for community projects.
Emmanuel emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and informal transport operators to promote safety, economic growth, and community development.
The riders also reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Ododo, pledging to mobilize support for his programmes across the state.
In response, the commissioner expressed gratitude for the recognition and assured that their requests would be forwarded to the governor for consideration.
He immediately directed the roofing of the association’s mosque and encouraged maintenance of community facilities as symbols of unity and social responsibility.
Additionally, Asiwaju Asiru Idris donated one million naira to support the riders’ daily feeding programme for Ramadan, a gesture warmly received by the association, who promised to extend the support to as many needy riders and residents as possible.
The commissioner also urged the riders to remain law-abiding and cooperate with government initiatives aimed at maintaining peace, security, and development in Kogi State.
The visit concluded with a brief photo session and prayers for the continued success of the Ododo administration.
Community leaders and local stakeholders present commended the riders for their proactive engagement and praised the commissioner for his responsiveness to citizens’ needs.
