Residents of Ayetoro community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have begun abandoning their homes following growing fear and tension sparked by a recent attack on a church in the area.

The incident has sent shockwaves across communities in Okunland, with Ayetoro witnessing a steady movement of residents—particularly women and children to neighbouring towns and villages considered safer.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the community has remained largely deserted since the attack, as uncertainty and anxiety now shape daily life.

Markets have recorded low patronage, while many farmers have stayed away from their farmlands for fear of possible attacks.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, said the assault on a place of worship deeply unsettled the people.

“When a church can be attacked, it means nobody is safe. That is why many families decided to leave immediately,” the source said.

Schools in the community have also been affected, with attendance dropping sharply as parents keep their children indoors.

Some school owners were said to have temporarily suspended academic activities until security improves.

Commercial activities have slowed considerably, as transport operators reduced services to the area due to security concerns.

Motorcyclists and commercial drivers reportedly avoid late-hour movements, further limiting mobility.

Traditional rulers and community leaders were said to have convened emergency meetings to calm residents and discourage panic, while calling on youths to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

Community leaders have appealed to the Kogi State Government and security agencies to urgently deploy additional personnel and step up patrols around Ayetoro and neighbouring communities to forestall further attacks.

Religious leaders have also called for calm, urging residents to avoid self-help and embrace peace, while prayers continue for lasting security across Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area.

As fear continues to grip the area, residents insist that only sustained security presence and proactive government intervention will restore confidence and normalcy to Ayetoro and its environs.
