Former Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State and the Obafaiye of Oworoland, Chief Sam Ranti Abenemi JP, has resigned his membership of the party and is set to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abenemi announced his resignation in a letter dated November 13, 2025, addressed to the National Chairman of the SDP through the Kogi State chapter, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent in Lokoja.
In the letter, Abenemi said his decision followed deep personal reflection on his political journey, commitments and future engagements, describing the step as one taken in good conscience.
He expressed appreciation to the party leadership for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as the Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 Kogi State Governorship Election and Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, noting that his resignation was without bitterness or rancour.
“My resignation is without bitterness or rancour, as I remain deeply respectful of the party and its ideals. I extend my best wishes to the leadership and all members of the SDP as they continue in their pursuit of democratic progress and good governance in Nigeria,” Abenemi stated.
Findings by NationalWatch Tv revealed that final arrangements have been concluded for Chief Abenemi to be formally received into the APC by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Monday, at the Muhammadu Buhari Square, Lokoja, alongside other notable defectors.
Speaking ahead of the event, Chief Abenemi disclosed that he would be decamping with over 50,000 supporters, saying the movement represents a new political alignment driven by unity, development and renewed hope for the people of Kogi State.
“We are moving in large numbers. Over 50,000 supporters across the three senatorial districts are joining me to embrace a platform where we believe progress and purposeful leadership can be achieved,” he said.
Sources within the APC said the reception ceremony is expected to attract top political leaders, former lawmakers, serving commissioners, and grassroots mobilisers across the state, describing Abenemi’s move as a significant boost for the ruling party.
Political observers believe his defection could reshape political alignments ahead of future elections, especially considering his strong political network in Kogi West and his influence within traditional and community structures as the Obafaiye of Oworoland.
Reactions have continued to trail the planned defection, with youth groups and community leaders praising Abenemi for what they described as a courageous and strategic step.
Many expressed confidence that his entry into the APC will energize the political space and strengthen grassroots mobilisation.
Supporters have also commenced preparations to welcome him at the grand reception, which will feature cultural displays, solidarity visits and speeches by key political figures.
Abenemi, known for his philanthropic gestures and community development initiatives, is expected to play a major role in APC restructuring and reconciliation efforts across Kogi State.
The resignation letter was signed and submitted to the SDP Secretariat in Lokoja.
