A fire outbreak on Saturday night gutted the residence of a veteran journalist and community leader, Tanimu Musa Nasidi, at Anguwan-Kura Street, Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, with the inferno also affecting some neighbouring houses.
Nasidi is the publisher of The Analyst Newspaper and a respected figure in the community.
The incident was reportedly caused by an electrical fault.
Speaking after the incident, Nasidi said all his properties were completely burnt, describing the loss as devastating.
He explained that the fire started shortly after electricity was restored to the area and spread rapidly, leaving occupants with little or no time to salvage their belongings.
Nasidi also cautioned the Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited (KED) to always ensure proper handling of electricity supply, routine checks of power lines and strict adherence to safety standards to prevent similar occurrences.
Speaking to newsmen, the Hakimi of Ward âDâ, Alhaji Isah Baba Nasidi, sympathised with the victims of the fire outbreak and called on the government and relevant agencies to come to their aid.
He advised KED to always take proper precautionary measures in power distribution to safeguard lives and property.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started late in the night and spread to nearby houses, destroying properties worth millions of naira and damaging household items before it was eventually brought under control.
Although no life was lost, several families were displaced by the incident.
Residents of Anguwan-Kura Street expressed concern over frequent fire outbreaks linked to electricity and called for improved power infrastructure and faster response from emergency services.
Relevant authorities have since been informed, while residents were urged to regularly inspect electrical installations and appliances to prevent future incidents.
