A Social Democratic Party (SDP), councilorship aspirant in Lokoja Ward ‘C’, Hon. Yahaya Bala Yusuf has raised the alarm over plans to impose a candidate on the SDP in the Ward.

Yahaya, who accused the Lokoja local government chairman of the SDP, Danladi Abdulrahman of planning to foist an aspirant as the party’s flagbearer, said the party members in the ward will reject such arraignment by electing an unblemished candidate who can win the councilorship seat.

Yahaya, who was the first councilorship aspirant to purchase the party’s nomination forms from the ward alleged that Abdulrahman had concluded plans to coerce the state Caretaker Chairman of the SDP, Hon. Sam Ranti Abenemi into appointing one of his allies as the chairman of the Ward ‘C’ Primary Committee.

He further alleged that hundred of votes will be cooked up in favour of the preferred candidate, while a handful of votes will be allocated to him (Yahaya).

In a statement which he signed in Lokoja yesterday and made available to newsmen, Yahaya insisted that stakeholders in the party have at various times expressed the need for a free and fair primaries in Lokoja LGA but that Abdulrahman is bent on imposing a candidate on the party which he said will be vehemently opposed and will end up ridiculing the democratic principles and antecedents the party leader, Alhaji Murtala Ajaka is known for and had always stood for.

Yahaya added that if Abdulrahman’s plot is left unchecked, the SDP would be thrown into a massive crisis which will snowball into a catastrophic loss of the October 19, local government election.

Meanwhile, in an interview with a cross section of youths in Lokoja Ward ‘C’, they warned that any imposition of candidate for the councilorship position will not only affect the chances of the SDP in the local government election, but also affects the party in subsequent elections in the state.
