A Federal High Court in Abuja has nullified the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) headed by former Senate President David Mark.
The court, in a ruling delivered on Wednesday, described the convention that produced the leadership as a kangaroo exercise carried out in violation of the party’s constitution.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising congresses, meetings or decisions taken by the disputed leadership pending the resolution of the matter.
The judge held that only duly elected party executives at the ward, state and national levels remain the authentic officers of the party until a lawful convention is conducted.
The court further ruled that any committee or caretaker arrangement set up outside the provisions of the party constitution cannot stand in law.
The judgment followed a suit filed by aggrieved members who challenged the legality of the convention and the emergence of the current leadership.
Reacting to the development, party members loyal to the plaintiffs described the verdict as a victory for internal democracy and the rule of law.
However, supporters of the David Mark camp are expected to challenge the ruling at the appellate court.
The latest development is expected to deepen the leadership crisis within the opposition party as political parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections.
