Residents of several riverine communities in the Lokoja-Kogi Federal Constituency have expressed satisfaction following the commencement of construction work on the Ikumo Bridge, a long-awaited project facilitated by Hon. Danladi Sulaiman Aguye, the Member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
The Ikumo Bridge, located within Kogi Local Government Area, is expected to serve as a vital link connecting about 25 communities that have for years faced serious transportation challenges, especially during the rainy season.
Communities expected to benefit directly from the project include Edeha, Iganuna, Adabode, Edegachi, Ikumo, Ibohu, Odama, Odama-Beki, Oreza, Esikaku, Irenodu, Ogbangede, Onumaye, Edimose, Mozu-Ete, Okpozogi, Ugwor, Adabgere, Otenyinse, Ette, Okofi, Agbudu, Tenegbo, and Okpareke.
Residents who spoke with journalists described the bridge as a “lifeline project,” noting that the absence of a reliable bridge had long hindered access to markets, schools, healthcare facilities, and other essential services across the communities.
According to them, the project will significantly ease the movement of agricultural produce, boost local commerce, and strengthen social and economic ties among the benefiting communities.
Community leaders commended Hon. Aguye for responding to the longstanding appeal of the people, describing the project as a demonstration of responsive representation and commitment to grassroots development.
A community elder from Ikumo noted that for decades residents had relied on makeshift wooden crossings and canoes to navigate the area, a situation that often became dangerous during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.
He said the bridge would bring relief to thousands of residents who depend on the route for their daily activities.
Another resident from Edeha, community, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, said the project would greatly improve access for farmers transporting produce such as cassava, maize, and yam to markets in nearby towns, adding that the improved connectivity would stimulate economic activities in the area.
Youth leaders in the constituency also expressed appreciation to the lawmaker, stating that the project demonstrates the importance of responsive leadership and the need for continued investment in rural infrastructure.
They urged the contractor handling the project to ensure quality and timely completion so that the communities can begin to enjoy the full benefits of the bridge.
Residents further called on government at all levels to complement the project with the construction of access roads and other social amenities that will enhance development across the benefiting communities.
Many of them expressed optimism that the Ikumo Bridge will not only improve transportation but also promote unity and stronger socio-economic relationships among the communities within the Lokoja-Kogi Federal Constituency.
