Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a live broadcast addressed to the people of the state.
In the broadcast, the governor said his decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, traditional rulers, and community leaders across Adamawa State.
He explained that the move was aimed at strengthening cooperation between the state and the federal government.
Fintiri stated that the decision was taken in the overall interest of Adamawa people, noting that aligning with the ruling party at the national level would help the state access more developmental opportunities and federal support.
According to him, his administration remains committed to delivering good governance, improving infrastructure, strengthening security, and creating more economic opportunities for residents of the state.
The governor also expressed gratitude to members and leaders of the PDP for the support he received during his time in the party, acknowledging their contributions to his political journey and administration.
He urged his supporters and political allies to remain calm and continue to support his government as it begins a new political chapter under the APC, emphasizing that the priority remains the peace, unity, and development of Adamawa State.
Political observers say the governor’s defection could significantly reshape the political dynamics in Adamawa and the North-East region, particularly as political parties begin to realign ahead of future elections.
Meanwhile, the announcement has generated mixed reactions among political stakeholders, with some welcoming the move as a strategic step, while others within the PDP describe it as a significant loss for the party in Adamawa State.
