President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the National Assembly of Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Senate, to consider amending the nation’s constitution to incorporate state police as part of efforts to strengthen security across the country.
The President said the creation of state police has become necessary to effectively secure communities, reclaim forests from criminal elements, and protect citizens, especially children, from living in constant fear.
Tinubu made the call while addressing lawmakers in Abuja, stressing that the current security architecture requires reforms that will enable states to take greater responsibility in safeguarding their territories.
According to him, empowering states to establish their own police forces will enhance intelligence gathering, improve rapid response to threats, and complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling insecurity.
The President also noted that many forests across the country have become hideouts for bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups, making it imperative for government at all levels to work together to reclaim such areas and restore safety to rural communities.
Tinubu further emphasized that constitutional amendments remain a critical step toward achieving lasting security reforms, urging senators to support legislative efforts that would enable the establishment of state police and strengthen the country’s overall security framework.
He expressed optimism that with the cooperation of the National Assembly and other stakeholders, Nigeria would be better positioned to confront security challenges and ensure that citizens, particularly children, can live without fear in their communities.
