Tension is mounting across Kogi State’s political landscape following strong indications that the state government may soon embark on a major purge of political appointees perceived to be loyal to Hon. James Abiodun Faleke.
The development is said to be a direct fallout of remarks made by former Governor Yahaya Bello during the recent convocation ceremony of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, where he hinted at an impending political realignment.
Speaking at the event, Bello stated: “Very soon, we shall know those who belong to us,” a comment widely seen as a warning to government officials believed to be aligning with political interests outside the current power structure.
Sources within government circles revealed that lists of appointees suspected to be sympathetic to Hon. Faleke are currently being compiled, creating heightened anxiety across ministries, departments, agencies, and local government councils.
The anticipated purge is reportedly linked to increasing calls by some political groups urging Faleke to contest the forthcoming governorship election in Kogi State.
“There is panic everywhere,” a government insider disclosed.
“Many officials fear they may be removed at any moment simply because they are perceived to be close to Faleke.”
Tension is said to have intensified following recent political movements and endorsements viewed by some power brokers as evidence of Faleke’s growing influence, despite his silence on whether he intends to join the governorship race.
Reactions have continued to trail the imminent shake-up. While some stakeholders have condemned it as an attempt to suppress legitimate political ambitions and deepen internal rifts within the ruling party, others argue that enforcing loyalty is necessary to maintain stability.
A supporter of Senator Sunday Karimi and a Special Adviser, who did not want his name in print, also expressed displeasure with the situation.
“I will soon resign my appointment. I am tired of this kind of government where the former governor continues to make policies. Kogi has become a banana republic,” he said.
As of press time, the state government has issued no official statement confirming or denying the planned sack, though sources say an announcement may be imminent.
Political analysts warn that the move could further widen divisions and heighten instability across the state.
