Residents of Karaworo Street in Lokoja, Kogi State, have called on relevant authorities to urgently intervene and rescue a sick man who was reportedly dumped in front of a shop by unknown persons suspected to be his family members.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has thrown the entire neighborhood into panic, as the stranded man, believed to be in his late 60s, lies helplessly on the ground without medical attention.
Eyewitnesses told NationalWatch TV that the man appeared very weak and could barely speak when some residents tried to approach him.
“We saw a vehicle drop him here around 5 a.m., and since then, he has been lying there. We don’t know who he is, but it seems his people abandoned him,” a resident said.
Speaking to NationalWatch TV on the development, a concerned resident, Mr. Idakwo Ekele, described the situation as heartbreaking and called on the government and health officials to act swiftly.
“It’s so sad to see a human being in this condition. We don’t know his identity, but we can’t just leave him here to die. The health authorities or emergency teams should please come and take him to the hospital,” Mr. Ekele pleaded.
He further lamented that the situation has caused fear among residents, as many are worried that the man could be suffering from a contagious illness.
“People are afraid to go near him because no one knows what exactly is wrong with him. But whether sick or not, he deserves medical attention,” he added.
Some residents who spoke on condition of anonymity said they have contacted the community vigilante group and the nearest police division to report the incident, but no official action has been taken so far.
Shops around the area have remained closed as traders and passersby continue to express concern over the abandoned man’s health.
A few sympathetic residents were seen placing water beside him while maintaining a safe distance.
Community leaders in Karaworo have also appealed to the Kogi State Ministry of Health and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to dispatch a medical team to the area.
They warned that if nothing is done urgently, the man may lose his life, which could spark further tension in the neighborhood.
As of the time of filing this report, the sick man was still lying at the spot where he was dumped, and there had been no official response from health authorities or security agencies.
